Indian Railways Catering And
Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started booking Railway tickets with the help
of SMS. You can also enquiry the seat availability and fare for a particular
train in a particular class.
Railway
Minister Mallikarjun Kharge launched
the facility of Booking of train tickets with the help of SMS. 80 percent of
population of India owns mobile phones, but how many of them are using internet
connections in their mobile & how many of them are having a smart phone to
book an e ticket? Out of 80 percent only 10 percent mobiles access internet
connection. The online booking through IRCTC has now grown up to about
45 per cent of total reserved tickets.
The main motive under
which IRCTC stated SMS based booking Indian railways ticket is for common
man who does not have access to internet and cannot afford to buy smart phones.
Railway Minister said this service will be useful for the labourers those who
are staying away from homes, this service will convenient as well as
cost-effective and they will not have to travel to booking counters and wait in
the queue for the entire day & forgo a day’s earnings. The SMS scheme will
not be available during 8 am-12 pm for booking ARP/tatkal/general tickets.
Why IRCTC SMS booking?
With
the help of Indian Railways SMS based Reservation System passengers can easily
book their tickets with the help of two, three messages. With the help of this
facility of Indian Railways passengers need not to wait hours in queue or waiting to book
an E-ticket through the irctc.co.in after facing a lots of internet traffic,
now passengers can easily do Rail ticket booking though SMS. Almost all
passengers would have faced Internet problems, server problems, network
problems, various error messages while booking an E-ticket through Indian
Railways due to huge numbers of traffic.
How to book tickets with IRCTC using Mobile SMS service ?
Presently there are 2 ways to
book IRCTC tickets using your mobile
1. SMS based booking
A. Book by sending SMS at 139.
B.
Book by sending SMS at 5676714.
C. Book by installing BSNL PrePaid Card
Application in your Java based phone.
2. USSD (Menu-based dialling)
USSD
Services are currently offered by:- Airtel Money
Airtel subscribers Dial *400# on their mobiles.
- Dial
designated number, you shall receive a Menu Based Screen dialing. Select
'book tickets' option, select 'reservation' (user is prompted to enter his
IRCTC user ID once only), enter details (date of
journey, station, train no, class, etc)
- Enter
mPIN for authorizing payment through mobile wallet
- Booking
confirmation SMS is sent by IRCTC
What is the step by step procedure to book railway ticket through SMS

Register your Mobile number with your bank, then
bank will provide you your MMID ( Mobile Money Identified) & OTP ( One Time
Password )

After getting the MMID & OTP you can book
your IRCTC SMS tickets with the help of SMS by sending it to 139 or 5676714.
For booking you need to type SMS with all your travel details like train
number, date of journey, boarding station and destination and Class of travel,
besides name, age and gender of the passenger then you have to send this to 139
or 5676714.

After sending the SMS to the IRCTC the passenger will get the transaction
ID from the IRCTC then he have to reply the SMS with PAY followed by the
transaction ID and the bank password (OTP)

After this you will get the confirmation message
and the ticket amount will be deducted from your bank account.

Then transaction a message will be sent to
the user by IRCTC which will be sufficient as the valid travel document along
with photo ID card in original.
What are the keywords need to be followed
STEP-1: Send below SMS with Journey &
Passenger Information to 139.
Type <BOOK> <Train No.> <From
City> <ToCity> <TravelDate(DDMM)> <Class>
<Passenger1-Name> <Age> <Gender> <Passenger2-Name>
<Age> <Gender> (Upto 6 Passengers) and send message to 139.
For Example:

If the format sent is valid, you would receive a
response message from 139 that look alike:
Trans Id: 42008426 Ticket Amount: 475 IRCTC SC: 33.36
Total Amount: 44.64
Seat: AVAILABLE -0095. For Payment SMS PAY <42008426
> IMPS <MMID> <OTP> IRCTCUserID to 139 to book ticket.
STEP-2: For payment, Send SMS with below
syntax to 139.
PAY <Transaction ID as received> <IMPS
as received from bank> <OTP as received from bank for this
transaction> <IRCTCUserID>
For Example:

Confirm message will be received from 139 on
successful booking of the ticket.

What is the IMPS & MMID required for IRCTC SMS booking of tickets.
At present Interbank Mobile
Payment System (IMPS) is required for the user to avail the facility of SMS
booking along with the Mobile Money Identifier (MMID) for making payment
through mobile. MMID is the seven digit random number which bank will provide
to the user. You can get your MMID by
visiting your branch else you can register your mobile number with this in your
ATM with your ATM card. MMID generation is a single click process
available with more than 26 Indian Banks covering over 90% of the total banking
subscriber base. The banks for the same are listed at http://www.npci.org.in/bankmember.aspx
Is it safe to do the monetary transaction through SMS using MMID & OTP
?
Yes, it is. Payment through
mobile phones was still evolving and banks are working on providing a safe,
secured and quick payment mechanism. You need to keep your MMID & OTP (One
Time Password) personal.
Whether any print out is
required in IRCTC's SMS based ticket booking?
No, after the transaction the
message which the user will receive will be sufficient for travel with valid
identity card. No print out is required with IRCTC SMS ticket booking.
What is the charge for booking train tickets with IRCTC SMS booking service?
The service is available to
all mobile subscribers and Rs 3 is being charged per SMS and payment gateway
charges are Rs 5 for ticket amount up to Rs 5,000 and Rs 10 for more than Rs
5,000.
How to cancel the IRCTC SMS based ticket?
Registered IRCTC users can now cancel the railway tickets booked by them
through SMS earlier by a simple two step process.
The Entire ticket needs to be cancelled:
STEP
1: An SMS
to be sent to 139 from your registered mobile to request for cancellation of
the ticket. SMS format as follow:
CAN <10 Digit PNR> <IRCTC
UserID>
For Example:
CAN 2345678901 Papun
After submission of the above SMS, a message would be received from 139. The
text of the same is mentioned below.
“We have
received your request to cancel your PNR Number 2345678901. Please confirm the
cancellation by sending YES to 139.”
STEP
2: After
receipt of the above message, the user needs to confirm the cancellation
by sending an SMS as “YES” to 139.
After submission of the above SMS, a message would be received from 139. The
text of the same is mentioned below.
“Your
ticket for passenger <Passenger1 Name> <Passenger2 Name> with PNR
Number: 2345678901 is cancelled. Refund Amount: 800 only.”
CASE
2: The
ticket needs to be partially cancelled.
STEP
1: An SMS
to be sent to 139 from your registered mobile to request for initiating a
partial cancellation of the ticket so booked by you earlier. Format of the SMS:
CAN <10 Digit PNR>
<IRCTCUserID> <Passenger Number>
For Example:
CAN 2345678901 papun 12(Upto 6)
STEP 2: After receipt of the above message, the user needs
to confirm the cancellation by sending SMS as “YES” to 139.
After submission of the above SMS, a message would be received from 139. The
text of the same is mentioned below:
“Your ticket for passenger
<Passenger1 Name> <Passenger2 Name> with PNR Number: 2345678901 is
cancelled. Refund Amount: 800 only.”
